"I will never look again ..."
... - so my brother answered me when asked if he had seen the "Green Mile". On my puzzled "Why?" Said that he does not want to cry any more, that he cried even more than over "Hatiko". Baa, what can bring to the tears of an adult guy, but even more powerful than the "Hatiko"? And I decided that I also need to look at it.
Here it is worthwhile to clarify that at that time I was just beginning to read the work of the same name by King. And at first reading somehow did not work out, but after such an interesting conversation, things went faster and ended up late at night with tears and loud sobs. To say that the book impressed me is not to say anything. Finally the turn of the film came.
Immediately, I note that the picture is not inferior in quality to the literary work. But it often happens like this: you read a book, in your mind there are certain images of characters. Suddenly you decide to watch a film shot on this very book, and then you are overtaken by disappointment: half of the story was cut out, and you did not imagine the characters yourself (I experienced something similar when watching War and Peace in 2007, "Anna Karenina" with Keira Knightley, "Shining" of the same King).
In the case of the "Green Mile" it's quite the opposite. The actors are not selected that is good, they are chosen perfectly. John Coffey - Well, there can not be any complaints in principle. Paul I imagined this way. The actor who played the role of Percy, from the first minutes is delighted. The Beast, Delacroix, the cleaner (forgot the name, he was always rehearsed with him), in general all the characters, from the main ones to the secondary ones, were successful. In the story, the filmmakers, too, in my opinion, did not miss anything. Oh, yes, it's worth noting the camerawork - the film really turned out to be beautiful, despite the cruelty that is reflected in it.
For me there is a small offense - I purposely squandered a few minutes of the film. For it was more than enough that I read about the sad fate of a small Frenchman. See it with your own eyes? Yes, guys, I'm scared.
As expected, the last 20 minutes of the film went to the accompaniment of convulsive sobbing. And here is the paradox: it seems that everything ended not as well as we would like, but afterwards you do not feel the heaviness in your soul. On the contrary, some kind of bright feeling settles inside you ... Relief, hope ... Call it what you want, but it's very unusual, because it seems you should pity the heroes. But is it possible in this story another ending?
When I discovered the "Green Mile" in the second position in the Top 250 of the Movie Search, I was not even surprised. I now only have to see the creation that has outstripped the "Mil" in this rating. While I "Escape from Shawshank" I only know on paper. I will not blame myself - the "Green Mile" impressed me more.
It only remains to add that unlike his brother, I, perhaps, will review the "Green Mile." And, probably, more than once.
