The story of a "small", obedient to fate, a staunch man in the hands of a merciless story.
What the director wanted to portray is understandable. But only because "it is not clear" can not be. Everything else, that is, in general everything in the film is in imbalance.
If you take only a superficial impression, then after viewing there is hatred for the Jews.
If you dig deeper, then everything is like in life: the versatility and ambiguity of dividing only into black and white. Vile remain vile until the end and, as a rule, come out clean from the water. The victims, it is in this case, safely become revenged, rich and almost holy. And the one who tells the truth, gets the most slaps of fate.
- She is! She is! She is! And she! - pokes a finger to the surviving concentration camps.
Too vulgar behavior for the educated person, is not it? By the end of the film, the same survivor will show another tactlessness in his question to Michael. And how every time she boasts of the fact that she is a victim, constantly repels me. And the thirst for retribution makes this woman a new “executioner”, which ultimately leads to doubts about the randomness of their salvation (read between the lines).
In the picture there is another coward. Yes, yes, I think Michael is a coward. And his silence in court, which could have played Hannah out of trouble, and his romantic story with books in prison and how, in the end, advises Hannah to do everything "quietly."
The only saint with a face here is Hannah. She does not lose her dignity even under the fear of severe punishment. Cadres in court with finding out the coincidence of her handwriting, show the pride of the heroine. And precisely pride. Not pride. And - repentance.
Trying to avoid punishment or reduce it by humiliating yourself for really terrible things done - not for Hannah. She accepts her crucifix. She repents.
At the end of the film, the director tries to create the impression that the victim girl forgives Hannah, but no catharsis comes. Only hate. Hatred of the victims of the concentration camps themselves. Hatred of the so-called lover. Hate to emerge unscathed.
One feels that it was Hannah who directed the most attention. Maybe he did not want to put all other actors, key people in a bad light, but this happened, even if by chance (all randomness is not accidental).
