Local fights
In the Soviet Union, and then in Russia, it was always customary to treat pictures about the Great Patriotic War with particular trepidation, and in this regard the film “... And the Dawns Here are Quiet” was no exception. But even whatever deep-seated patriotic sentiments on the background of many other pictures with similar subjects, the picture stands out for its high level of directorial, camera and actor's work, as well as a memorable plot.
For director Stanislav Rostotsky, this was not the first film about the war. By that time, he had “May stars” and “Seven winds” assets. In his works, Rostotsky used to glorify not large-scale military operations, but the difficult fate of ordinary people in the war years. So the picture, shot according to Boris Polevoy's bestseller, became a logical continuation of the favorite creative line and, perhaps, the director's career peak. She won the widespread love of the Soviet audience, and was also seen in the West and was awarded an Oscar nomination, which in itself is an infrequent phenomenon.
It should be noted cast. It's hard to believe, but Andrei Martynov, who played the experienced and wise life of Foreman Vaskov, was only 26 years old at the time of filming. The girls, the actresses who played the soldiers of the anti-aircraft forces, each of which is an undoubted adornment of the film, even from an aesthetic point of view, were completely recruited from yesterday’s graduates of theatrical universities. Everyone coped with her task superbly, but I would like to mention Olga Ostroumova, who played Komelkov, who, on the one hand, is meant to personify the main beauty of a platoon, and on the other hand, is a very bright and sometimes contradictory character, both in peace and in military life.
Of course, all this would remain only visible components necessary to create any good film, if it were not for the exceptional piercing bitterness, the story told in it. We all somehow got used to seeing men in arms, war has long been considered just a man’s affair, that is why it’s so unexpected to look like a story about completely young girls who defended their Motherland. The action takes place around five soldiers from the anti-aircraft unit, led by sergeant-general Vaskov, who entered an unequal battle with almost three times superior German soldiers in the deaf swampy forests of Karelia. Here we can say that such an alignment was the price paid for a certain self-confidence shown when planning a military operation, but what it already matters. War requires sacrifices and heroes, and now Fedot Vaskov, who, generally speaking, will give a hundred points of handicap to any foreign Rambo in combat and tactical training, has to fight for himself and for his fighters, just like a hen protects barely fledged chickens from the dangers waiting for them in the big world. And these chickens, as usual, are not at all determined to sit under the wing and scatter in different directions, now one, then the second. All these girls even in war remain girls, they all dream of a peaceful life, love. And this love is different for everyone: waiting for someone, not waiting for someone anymore, someone far away, someone very close, someone already passed, and someone else to come. And in this regard, I would like once again to pay tribute to the excellent directorial work. The picture is full of a certain hope and optimism emanating from the heroes who repeatedly push back some horrible something that is about to come, and when, finally, it happens, it all sounds more like a bad dream, which in theory should end soon . And then there is a definite question: who is harder: the one who laid down his head or the one who survived and forced to bear this cross to the end of his days.
