For freedom - to the end
Now the word "freedom" is so firmly entrenched in the minds of humanity that hearing the phrase: "You are dependent, you are not free" - sounds like a direct insult, despite the fact that everyone puts something into this concept. But did people think that in the 13th century?
The film clearly shows the separation of society, the privileges of one over the other, and how each of them thinks and perceives reality. The protagonist William Wallace (Mel Gibson) is a barbarian, a commoner, early loses his father and brother, remains alone with his uncle Uncle Argil, who later gives him a good European education. Returns to his homeland, he is already in adulthood, is going to lead a peaceful life, grow crops, avoid trouble, wants to settle down, start a family and children. Here he meets a girl from his childhood - Maron (Mhayri Calvi), whom he immediately falls in love with. It seems that his dreams are about to begin to materialize ...
But in the end everything turns different. Dreams of a peaceful life are scattered to dust, when everything that is so precious and precious to you is taken away from you. When you cross the threshold of legality - there is no longer a way back. And here we have a completely different William Wallace - a knight, the leader of the Scots in an unequal war of independence, a hero in whom the upper classes of society did not believe, a man who was able to unite the people and lead them along. After all, one must have a certain cast of mind and character traits in order to be able to gather so many people around him. This is courage, purposefulness, strong-willed spirit, courage, foresight, and courage not to break down and follow their principles and ideas to the end, and the art of the commander, and the ability to choose the right tactics, and, of course, brave heart.
The game of actors at the highest level. For all three hours of the film, one can’t even catch myself thinking that all this is not true, that this is just a game and nothing more, that these are fictional characters, whose fate you shouldn’t think more than five minutes. All costumes, images, dialogues - everything is so carefully chosen and thought out that from the very first minutes of the film you penetrate the spirit of that time, look into every detail, listen to every word, and it comes to the fact that you already feel like an integral participant in those events.
I would particularly like to mention Robert the Bruce (Aengus McFadyen). Throughout the film, we see the evolution of the spiritual life of this man - the 17th descendant from the Bruce family, the count, the main contender for the throne of Scotland - and it is truly interesting to watch her. From a little man who obeys the selfish desires of his father, he turns into a self-confident warrior, a fighter who makes his choice and really knows which side he is on. The last scene of the film is very important, where he squeezes Maron’s bloody scarf and abdicates the throne to continue the struggle for the independence of his country.
I want to say a single word about the music in the film. It helps the viewer to fully immerse themselves in the atmosphere of that time, makes her unique contribution to the perception of events, makes you cry, then smile, then press, then makes lightness and peace. The sounds of Scottish bagpipes throughout the film awaken faith in the main character, in his warriors, it feels as if it gives them strength and courage. To the sound of bagpipes, the Scots went to battle for their freedom. The whole history of Scotland is the history of the people's struggle for their existence, their independence, for the preservation of their traditions and culture.
Very touching, sometimes even sentimental, historical film with a slightly peculiar to him heroic pathos, which does not spoil the picture and the whole impression as a whole. This story is relevant for all times, even just because people very often are dissatisfied with something, but no one does anything. Everybody needs William Wallace.
Every man dies. But not every man really lives.
